One of Avey & Son’s most ambitious projects to date saw a landmark Gothic church in Edgbaston converted into 12 apartments, two of which were purchased as investments by an Aston Villa footballer, one as an investment and a penthouse property which he lived in with his wife.
As well as the challenges of working with a historic listed building, Avey & Son had to manage access issues and work around the needs of local residents. The old pews were removed and set aside to be turned into bespoke pieces of furniture in keeping with their setting in the apartments and communal areas. Ensuring the character of the building was retained, a steel frame was installed to create levels for the apartments.
The mix of two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments meant the building was brought back to life in a way sympathetic to its heritage. Turning the stained-glass windows into modern units while retaining the original coloured glass panes was among the many highlights of a job well done.
